NY-ISO Capacity Value of Storage

The New York ISO (grid operator) proposed market rules in 2018 that would have set the capacity value for 4-hour duration battery storage at half that for conventional resources. This rule would have substantially reduced the value of battery storage to replace aging, dirty peaker plants. GridLab helped sponsor a study to show how NYISO’s calculations were incorrect, and now NYISO is proposing a capacity value for storage roughly equivalent to conventional resources.
