Right-Sizing Future Electric Transmission Systems
To face this pivotal moment in our energy history energy system planners and regulators need to better synthesize the worlds of electric generation and transmission. This report, “Right-Sizing Future Electric Transmission Systems,” highlights that while unprecedented expansion will be necessary to increase reliability, maintain affordability, and meet new loads, smarter coordinated planning could optimize this effort. To meet the challenges facing the industry, organizations need to foster dynamic and adaptive coordination between resource planning (what we build) and transmission planning (how we deliver it). Drawing on insightful case studies of four major U.S. utilities, the report moves beyond theory to offer an “idealized coordination” framework and a set of actionable recommendations for utilities, regulators, and stakeholders. This work provides an essential roadmap for navigating the complexities of grid modernization, paving the way for a more cost-effective, resilient, and decarbonized power system through intelligent and collaborative planning.
