In 2023, GridLab supported the expansion and rollout of GridStatus, a publicly available open-source dashboard for visualizing the status of grids across the US. Understanding the real time status of grids allows transparency into the reliability discussion, and demonstrates how clean energy can support reliable grids. Leveraging publicly available data from ISOs and the EIA, GridStatus provides free access to essential information, insights, and tools for people and applications working to decarbonize the grid.

Developed by Sylvan Energy Analytics and funded by GridLab, GridPath RA is an open-source modeling platform that includes capacity expansion, production cost, and resource adequacy modeling, as well as public load, resource, and transmission datasets. Sourcing from publicly available data, it serves as an advanced, transparent tool that can be leveraged by regulators, utilities, researchers, and other stakeholders to conduct independent and publicly accessible resource adequacy analysis.

GridPath RA was applied to a Western US 2026 resource adequacy analysis case study; three portfolio compositions were analyzed to inform near-term planning decisions. The case study describes near-term RA risk, the value of coherent weather datasets, and opportunities for efficient solutions to mitigate RA risk.

We also evaluated resource adequacy across the Eastern Interconnection using GridPath and publicly available datasets. With a near-term study year of 2028, we analyzed the role of interregional transmission in mitigating loss of load risk across diverse regions under varying system conditions. The results highlight how coordinated planning and regional diversity can enhance reliability, particularly in the face of load growth, resource retirements, and growing weather-driven risk. The analysis has resulted in a publicly available Eastern Interconnection GridPath model that can be used for future analysis by multiple stakeholders.

In 2024, Western Resource Advocates (WRA) engaged Energy Strategies to develop a data dashboard that could be used by WRA and other transmission advocacy organizations to identify congested areas on the bulk transmission system in the Western United States. Energy Strategies developed an interactive dashboard displaying 3 years of historical non-firm available transfer capability for 25 key transmission paths identified by WRA.
