About GridLab and Energy Strategies

GridLab is a national non-profit that provides technical grid expertise to enhance policy decision-making and ensure a rapid transition to a reliable, cost-effective, and low-carbon energy future. GridLab’s technical assistance supports advocates in integrated resource planning, transmission planning, grid modernization and distributed energy resource planning, and industry thought leadership on a range of clean energy issues. GridLab partners with a broad network of expert consultants to accomplish its goals.

Energy Strategies is a Salt Lake City-based consultancy providing technical support on integrated resource planning processes and developing custom models to evaluate the US power system under high penetrations of renewables. The firm has worked in electric venues across North America for over three decades and has developed a deep understanding of the technical, economic, and policy drivers of power markets. Energy Strategies is part of the GridLab expert network and has worked on several GridLab initiatives.

Position Overview

We are seeking a Power Systems Intern for the summer of 2025 that will support GridLab’s goals while working directly with GridLab’s expert consultant, Energy Strategies. The position will be based in Salt Lake City, where the Energy Strategies office is located. You will work in Energy Strategies’ Market & Grid Analytics or Transmission & Power Delivery practices areas and will assist in a variety of energy planning and analysis projects.

This internship will provide you with deep exposure to the energy world. Through this opportunity, you will gain valuable hands-on experience in a technical project and build your professional network under the guidance of an experienced industry mentor. You will have opportunities to work alongside knowledgeable experts and present your work, as well as sharpen applicable skills through a variety of professional development activities.

What You Will Do
  • Perform energy data analysis, including compiling data, spreadsheets, and original research.
  • Complete an analytical power system modeling or simulation project where you execute simulations, analyze data, perform quality-assurance, and interpret results.
  • Develop a working knowledge of an open-source data or modeling tool within the field; and support the development of in-house and commercial grid modeling tools.
  • Develop client presentations and written materials.
  • Develop a 1 pager on relevant industry challenges and opportunities.
  • Attend client meetings and summarize key meeting takeaways.
  • Work closely with other engineers and project managers on other client engagements.
  • Develop and present a final analytical project at the end of the internship, incorporating expertise and feedback from a broad range of industry experts.
A good fit will have:
  • Demonstrated experience with energy analysis or power systems modeling (such as through a previous internship or class project).
  • Strong record of academic performance.
  • Strong analytical and quantitative skills, including training in probability/statistics.
  • Ability to effectively communicate ideas verbally and in writing, with an emphasis on clear and concise communication and the ability to document and describe one’s work, assumptions, and approach.
  • Be a self-starter passionate about the subject matter and eager to contribute
  • Highest degree of professionalism and integrity.
  • Experience managing large data sets, including those used in grid modeling
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office tools.
  • Proficiency with programming tools (e.g., Python, Java, R, GIS, Matlab).
  • Genuine interest in the evolution of the grid and the development of new technologies and infrastructure, including energy storage, transmission, and generation.
Education Requirements
  • Current or recent graduate students from UC Merced in any engineering discipline or a technical field such as economics, physics, or mathematics.
  • 3.25 GPA
Location and Compensation

This is an on-site position at the Energy Strategies office in Salt Lake City. A relocation stipend will be available to support you in living expenses and travel. This is a full-time, paid position from mid-May to mid-August 2025, with a compensation of $30/hr. We believe in-person exposure is the best way to learn the most, build a strong network, and have fun. For special circumstances, we will consider hybrid remote-on-location positions (e.g., 1 month in Salt Lake City, remaining remote).
