Power System Analysis for Advocacy

Transmission expansion can unlock new lower cost generation, increase system reliability, and reduce pollution. For this reason, it is important for energy advocates of all types to understand and engage in their region’s transmission planning process. Unfortunately, transmission system analysis is a highly technical and time-consuming undertaking, which can be a barrier for advocates. Therefore, the goal of this document is to provide a simplified explanation of concepts to focus on the outcomes important to energy advocates.

This guide provides an outline including how transmission planning regions are organized, the mechanics of power system analysis, and the limitations of current processes.  Throughout the guide, links to resources are provided so that advocates can dive deeper into the concepts as needed.
