Expertise to Enable Grid Transformation

GridLab’s mission is to provide expert capacity and thought leadership to address technical challenges and reliability questions in the implementation of clean energy policies.

GridLab’s Theory of Change

In 2023, GridLab supported the expansion and rollout of GridStatus, a publicly available open-source dashboard for visualizing the status of grids across the US. Understanding the real time status of grids allows transparency into the reliability discussion, and demonstrates how clean energy can support reliable grids. Leveraging publicly available data from ISOs and the EIA, GridStatus provides free access to essential information, insights, and tools for people and applications working to decarbonize the grid.

GridLab’s support has allowed GridStatus to evolve from basic functionality to now include:

  • Regional Curtailment
  • Thermal generator outages
  • Price maps
  • Information on non-RTO regions
  • Emissions information
  • Real time clean energy records
